Moldovans use general medical services less, but visit dentists more often

In 2025, a patient made eight visits to a doctor and one visit to a dentist. The average length of hospital stay was seven days. During the same period, visits to specialists declined by approximately three million, while visits to the dentist increased.

On average, there are 52 doctors for every 10,000 inhabitants. Analyzing recent years, we can see that the number of doctors has increased by about 200 compared to the figures from 2023 and 2024.

At the same time, there has been a steady decline in the number of referrals to doctors. In 2022, there were 22.1 million referrals, but by 2025, this number had decreased to 19.8 million.

Conversely, Moldovans are increasingly seeking dental services, with referrals rising significantly from 1.3 million in 2022 to 1.5 million in 2025.

The positive perception of one’s own health among the urban population is 53.3%, while in rural areas, it is around 40%. Conversely, 7.8% of rural residents rate their health as bad or very bad, compared to 4.7% of city dwellers.

Additionally, men tend to view their health more positively: 49.6% consider themselves healthy, compared with 43% of women. Only 6% of men reported their health as bad or very bad, which is a lower percentage than the 7% of women who reported the same.

According to official data, there were 792,000 requests for emergency medical assistance registered in 2025, averaging approximately 2,200 requests per day.

The urban population spends more on healthcare than the rural population. Specifically, health expenditures accounted for 5.2% of total expenditures among urban residents, compared with just 3.7% among rural residents.
