Over 400,000 Moldovans switched to the new ID card; ASP urges diaspora to apply too

The Public Services Agency (ASP) has issued 400,000 new identity cards just over a year after their launch. Representatives of the agency state that these new identity cards enhance security, improve access to digital public services, and align the Republic of Moldova with European Union standards.
ASP Director Mircea Eșanu reported during the “Bună dimineața” program on Moldova 1 that interest in the new identity card is steadily increasing, particularly among young people.
“We are pleased to offer the identity cards free of charge, along with the electronic signature and card reader. Approximately 90% of individuals aged 18 to 25 also request the electronic signature. During this period, as many members of the diaspora return home, we encourage them to take advantage of this opportunity. The process is quick and can be completed in 15 to 20 minutes,” said Mircea Eșanu.
In addition to serving as an identity document, the new card allows users to utilize an electronic signature, granting access to hundreds of online public services. Applicants can submit their request to activate the electronic signature during the same visit to the ASP.
According to the director, there are around 400 electronic services available at the government level, and the ASP provides nearly 100 services that can be accessed entirely online, with some even delivered to your home.
“Beyond being a document that meets the highest security standards, the identity card helps us align with European standards. By introducing this document, the Republic of Moldova is almost fully compliant with the European Union's requirements in this area. The only remaining element to be implemented is the inclusion of the European Union flag on the document,” noted Mircea Eșanu.
The new identity card is valid for 10 years and complies with European security standards. ASP representatives emphasize that individuals holding valid identity cards are not required to replace them before their expiration.
