Moldova commemorates famine and Soviet deportation victims at National Memory Congress in Chisinau

This year, the Republic of Moldova observes two significant tragic events in its recent history: the 80th anniversary of the organized famine of 1946–1947 and the 85th anniversary of the Soviet deportations of 1941. To mark these occasions, the National Congress of Memory will be held in Chisinau. This event aims to commemorate the victims of political repression and promote historical truth.
The congress will take place on Sunday, June 28, starting at 09:00, at the Palace of the Republic. This event aims to serve as a platform for dialogue among survivors of Soviet repression, their descendants, representatives of public authorities, historians, researchers, museum institutions, and civil society organizations that are involved in preserving historical memory.
This year's edition will focus on the importance of maintaining historical truth and strengthening the culture of memory in the Republic of Moldova, particularly in the context of commemorating two tragedies that have profoundly impacted Bassarabian society.
The congress program will include greeting messages from high-ranking officials, scientific communications, and debates dedicated to the victims of the communist totalitarian regime. Participants will discuss political repression, its effects on society, and the significance of passing historical memory on to new generations.
The event is organized by the Ministry of Education and Research, which highlights that the initiative aims to reaffirm the role of historical education in consolidating democratic values and fostering respect for the memory of those who suffered during the Soviet regime.
Participation is free, but prior registration is required through a form provided by the organizers.
The authorities encourage citizens to participate in the National Congress of Memory and join this effort of commemoration, reflection, and reaffirmation of the importance of preserving historical memory.
