Muchova wins Bad Homburg Open after Osaka retires

Czech tennis star Karolína Muchová secured the Bad Homburg Open title in Germany following the retirement of Japan's Naomi Osaka during the second set. Muchová dominated the opening exchanges of the final, leading 6-1, 1-0 before the match came to an abrupt halt.

The Japanese former world number one requested medical assistance early in the first set after Muchová converted two consecutive break points to establish a commanding 3-0 lead. Despite receiving extensive treatment on her right ankle, Osaka briefly returned to the court but ultimately chose to withdraw at the beginning of the second frame.

Rankings and career milestones

The victory marks the third WTA singles title of Muchová's career. She advanced to the final after defeating Romania's Gabriela Ruse in a hard-fought semifinal showdown.

The championship performance propels Muchová to world number nine in the official WTA rankings, effective June 29. The achievement solidifies her position among the global elite ahead of the grass-court season highlights.

Wimbledon preparations

Both athletes will now shift their focus to London for the upcoming championships at Wimbledon, the third Grand Slam tournament of the calendar year.

In the opening round, Muchová faces a challenging match against Anastasia Zakharova, who will compete as a neutral athlete. Meanwhile, Osaka aims to recover in time for her first-round encounter against France's Elsa Jacquemot.
