Vienna Ringturm facade features Moldovan art in historic cultural debut

A contemporary artist from the Republic of Moldova has designed the monumental artwork covering the facade of Vienna’s iconic Ringturm building for the first time in history. The installation by Pavel Braila, titled "Your Happiness is in Your Own Hands," transforms the corporate headquarters into a massive open-air art gallery focusing on a central symbol of Moldovan culinary tradition: stuffed cabbage rolls, locally known as sarmale.

For nearly two decades, the Ringturm building has invited a prominent contemporary artist annually to wrap its historic facade. This year, the selection committee chose Braila’s conceptual artwork, which was originally created in 2007.

Cultural diplomacy and economic ties

The monumental mural spans 4,000 square meters and has attracted significant attention from the Viennese public. Moldovan officials emphasized that the project serves as an essential vehicle for cultural soft power within the European Union.

"We are proud to promote the Republic of Moldova not only through agricultural exports to the European Union but also through contemporary art," stated Eugen Osmochescu, Minister of Economic Development and Digitalization. Osmochescu noted that the visual representation of crafting sarmale by hand serves as a broader metaphor for national self-reliance and economic determination.

Victoria Rosa, the Moldovan Ambassador to Austria, highlighted that the exhibition underscores the strengthening bilateral relations between Chisinau and Vienna. Austria remains a key institutional supporter of Moldova's European integration process, mirrored by rising Austrian corporate investments and cultural exchanges.

Gastronomic engagement

The artistic concept extended beyond the architectural installation through an interactive culinary workshop. International guests, diplomatic representatives, and members of the Moldovan diaspora participated in a masterclass to learn the traditional preparation of the dish.

Organizers utilized both grape leaves and pickled cabbage to demonstrate the diverse regional variations of the recipe, including vegetarian options. International participants noted that the handcrafted dish paired exceptionally well with high-quality Moldovan wine exports.

Braila is widely recognized for his work in film, photography, and performance art exploring identity, collective memory, and socio-political transformations in Eastern Europe. His separate project, "The Thousand and Second Night," recently marked Moldova's official debut pavilion at the International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale.
