Serbian President Vucic announces snap autumn elections amid protests

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced plans to resign in the coming weeks and trigger early parliamentary and presidential elections. The unexpected move directly addresses a core demand of ongoing student-led demonstrations. Vucic shared the decision on Saturday, June 27, during a rally in front of his supporters.

The snap legislative and presidential elections are scheduled to take place this upcoming autumn. Vucic has consolidated executive power in Serbia for the past 12 years. His current second presidential term was originally set to expire in mid-2027.

Constitutional boundaries and political strategy

The Constitution of Serbia strictly limits individuals to a maximum of two presidential terms. Vucic previously stated he would not modify the constitution to extend his presidency.

However, the Serbian leader confirmed he will participate in the parliamentary elections with the goal of securing the position of prime minister. Vucic previously headed the Serbian government as prime minister from 2014 to 2017.

Catalyst of the student movement

The nationwide anticorruption demonstrations have entered their eighteenth month. The movement erupted following the tragic collapse of a concrete canopy at a railway station in Novi Sad, an incident that claimed 16 lives.

Demonstrators accuse Vucic and his inner circle of systemic corruption, ties to organized crime, and heavy-handed political repression. The student movement continues to draw tens of thousands of citizens to the streets on a regular basis.

Public support and opposition reactions

Public opinion data indicates massive domestic backing for the student agenda. Approximately 80% of Serbian citizens support the anticorruption demands, while 64% actively endorse the demonstrations.

Savo Manojlovic, a prominent student opposition leader from the Movement for Change, dismissed the announcement as a tactical maneuver. Manojlovic stated that Vucic is attempting to seize the initiative to avert an inevitable collapse driven by a student movement that now commands greater public support than the president himself.
