Seven Lyme disease cases confirmed in Chisinau in one week

Seeking medical attention urgently is crucial if bitten by a tick. This guidance from health authorities follows the report of seven Lyme disease cases in Chisinau within just one week.

Seven cases of Lyme disease were reported, highlighting the need for ongoing epidemiological vigilance. Aliona Drăgănel, the interim head of the General Directorate of Medical and Social Assistance, emphasized this during a meeting at the Chișinău City Hall on Monday, June 29. She urged that measures be strengthened to inform the public about preventing exposure to ticks and encouraged individuals to adopt protective behaviors in areas where they may be at risk.

Authorities recommend that citizens thoroughly check their bodies for ticks after walking in parks and forests and seek medical assistance if they develop specific symptoms. Additionally, those who are bitten by ticks or animals should not delay consulting a doctor.

To help prevent the spread of communicable diseases and safeguard public health, Drăgănel advised wearing clothing that covers the skin, conducting body checks after outdoor activities, and seeking medical attention for symptoms such as fever, diarrhea, or rash. She also stressed the importance of consulting a doctor as soon as possible after any animal bites.

In the past week, public and private medical institutions in the Chișinău municipality reported a total of 808 cases of illness, with 57.1% of those cases involving children aged 0 to 17 years.

"The epidemiological situation regarding acute intestinal infections is under continuous surveillance. During this reporting period, 152 cases of acute diarrheal diseases were registered, compared to 135 cases in the previous week. This total includes 25 sporadic cases of food poisoning," Drăgănel reported.

Additionally, in the last week, there were nine cases of scarlet fever and 58 cases of chickenpox, with 24 cases occurring within children’s groups.

The authorities in the capital have committed to continuing their epidemiological surveillance, including checking sanitary conditions in recreational areas and children's camps, as well as monitoring food product sales in the city’s markets.
