Moldovan women face higher retirement age as pension reform advances
The standard retirement age for women in Moldova increased from 61 years and six months to 62 years. The legislative change does not affect men, whose retirement age remains fixed at 63.

This adjustment marks a new phase in Moldova's ongoing gradual equalization of retirement thresholds. The transition is scheduled to conclude in 2028, when the retirement age for both genders will match at 63.
Fiscal sustainability versus social equity
Economic analysts state that the reform is vital to relieve the structural pressure on the country's public pension system. However, demographic experts point to significant equity issues within the current framework.
Mothers who gave birth to and raised at least five children until the age of eight receive a three-year reduction. Consequently, their retirement age became 59.
Nevertheless, women who raised two, three, or four children receive no such relief. Demographers argue this policy creates an unfair burden, failing to reward the demographic contributions of multi-child families.
Economic realities and pension thresholds
Local public sentiment remains highly critical of the extension. Many citizens emphasize that systemic fatigue and poor living standards make working later in life exceptionally difficult.
"State child care subsidies fail to cover basic living costs for both mothers and dependents," noted demographer Valeriu Sainsus. He suggested that policymakers must review these gaps as the pension reform advances.
Currently, citizens require a minimum contribution period of 15 years to qualify for an age-limit pension. However, this minimum yields only a proportionally reduced allowance. A full pension requires a complete 34-year contribution history.
Following the annual indexation, the average age-limit pension in Moldova stands at approximately €227 (4,450 MDL). The absolute minimum pension is €167 (3,264 MDL), while individuals with an extended contribution history of over 40 years receive €180 (3,525 MDL).
