Ukraine strikes Lukoil refinery in Nizhny Novgorod region

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine confirmed a successful airstrike targeting the Lukoil-Nizhegorodnefteorgsintez refinery in the city of Kstovo, located within Russia's Nizhny Novgorod region. According to military officials and independent outlet Astra, the drone attack triggered a significant fire on the facility's grounds.

Preliminary assessments indicate the operation damaged the plant's strategic AVT-6 primary crude distillation unit. Operational damage metrics remain under review.

Strategic target vulnerability

Open-source intelligence (OSINT) specialists at Astra highlighted that the exact same distillation unit was previously targeted in separate airstrikes during both May and July 2026.

The Lukoil-Nizhegorodnefteorgsintez facility stands as one of the largest oil processing enterprises in the Russian Federation, maintaining a design capacity of 17 million metric tons of crude oil per year. The plant manufactures specialized aviation fuel, gasoline, diesel, and lubricants directly utilized to sustain the logistics of the Russian Armed Forces.

In a parallel development, independent defense sources also confirmed structural damage to a key railway bridge spanning the Seversky Donets River near the settlement of Stanitsia Luhanska.

Collateral impact and casualties

Local monitoring groups reported that Ukrainian drone debris additionally impacted a residential apartment block located at 17 Captain Rachkov Boulevard in Kstovo.

Nizhny Novgorod Governor Gleb Nikitin claimed that Russian air defense systems intercepted 30 Ukrainian drones overnight. However, the governor confirmed that falling debris inflicted what he characterized as non-critical damage to an industrial site alongside several residential structures. The regional government confirmed that one civilian was killed and four others sustained injuries during the overnight engagement.
