Trump marks US 250th independence anniversary at Mount Rushmore

US President Donald Trump launched the nationwide semicentennial Independence Day weekend celebrations on Friday night, delivering a speech at Mount Rushmore. Addressing listeners from the historic monument, Trump praised the United States as a unique and powerful nation, asserting that its finest eras are yet to emerge.

The event took place ahead of the scheduled July 4 national ceremonies in Washington D.C. While temperatures at Mount Rushmore hovered around 18°C, the capital prepared to host celebrations on the National Mall under a severe, disrupting heatwave affecting large portions of the country.

National identity and ideological confrontation

During his 30-minute address, the American president offered a highly optimistic outlook for the future while explicitly defending traditional American culture. According to press agency reports, Trump heavily focused on national strength, aligning with preview statements released by White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.

Trump repeatedly invoked the distinct character of the nation, stating that American freedom has endured due to the culture and patriotism of its citizens rather than legislative text alone. However, he warned of ongoing domestic attempts to alienate the public from its historical heritage and dissolve national identity.

Electoral retoric and foreign policy remarks

The president also launched a fierce rhetorical assault against communism, a term he applied directly to opposition Democrats contesting the upcoming November 2026 midterm elections. He categorized the ideological shift as a lethal threat to American constitutional liberty, comparing its danger to the historical impact of the September 11 attacks.

According to political outlets, Trump claimed the opposition party relies heavily on illegal immigrants and those refusing to participate in the workforce. He urged the Republican legislative base to eliminate the Senate filibuster and pass the SAVE America Act to secure long-term electoral stability.

Before concluding, the president briefly referenced ongoing geopolitical friction with Iran, claiming the administration in Tehran remains anxious to secure a diplomatic accord. Trump closed by paying tribute to the four presidential faces carved into Mount Rushmore—George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln—praising them as bold leaders who safeguarded American sovereignty.
