Moldova EU accession on track despite PM resignation

The resignation of Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu will not affect the European Union's ongoing support for Moldova. Brussels expressed firm confidence that Chisinau will swiftly form a new government to sustain its reform agenda and accession path.
The European Commission acknowledges Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu’s decision to step down, spokesperson Markus Lammert stated on Monday, July 6. The EU respects Moldova's constitutional processes and looks forward to working with the succeeding administration.
According to the EU Executive, the partnership with Moldova remains resolute. Brussels pledges to continuously back the nation's European integration goals, in strict accordance with the democratic will of its citizens.
Siegfried Mureșan, Chairman of the EU-Moldova Parliamentary Association Committee, reinforced this stance. He stated that the prime ministerial transition does not jeopardize Moldova's EU negotiations or its broader European trajectory.
Mureșan highlighted four core guarantees ensuring this political continuity. These include the EU's institutional commitment, the public mandate from recent elections, a solid pro-European parliamentary majority, and the steady pace of structural reforms.
Since 2021, Moldova has achieved unprecedented progress in its modernization efforts. This track record positions the nation as a frontrunner among EU candidates, according to recent European Parliament and Commission assessments.
Meantime, preparations for the next phase of accession talks are moving forward as planned, European diplomatic sources confirmed. Member states agreed last week to advance the evaluation letters for Cluster 6, which covers external relations.
COREPER is scheduled to formally approve these evaluation documents this week. Official endorsement is expected on July 13, ahead of an Intergovernmental Conference (IGC) meeting session on July 14.
European sources indicated no disruption to this timeline from the political developments in Chisinau. The EU intends to secure further cluster progress before the upcoming summer recess.
