Cardiologists: Most heart diseases can be prevented

Cardiovascular diseases continue to be the leading cause of death in the Republic of Moldova and in many European countries. While the incidence of these conditions remains high, healthcare professionals emphasize that many cases can be prevented by effectively managing risk factors and seeking timely medical attention.

Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of morbidity in countries worldwide, and the Republic of Moldova is no exception. According to Ion Popovici, a doctor of medical sciences, the statistics on diseases in Moldova align with European averages, as he stated on the "Zi de Zi" program on Radio Moldova.

Doctor Popovici emphasized that many problems arise from neglecting symptoms and risk factors, despite the fact that these can be managed effectively.

He highlighted that arterial hypertension, high blood sugar levels, and elevated cholesterol are significant risk factors that can be identified and treated promptly. "All of these can be corrected—absolutely all of them. This is the main issue for patients, as most of them completely overlook it", doctor Popovici stated.

Additionally, he pointed out that in recent years, the government has provided financial support for the treatment and prevention of cardiovascular diseases. As a result, patients can benefit from specialized programs and access to subsidized medications.

The doctor emphasizes the importance of not neglecting regular medical check-ups and monitoring one’s health to prevent complications.

"Consult a cardiologist to understand your current health status and determine if you need preventive treatment to avert more serious issues," advised Ion Popovici.

According to medical professionals, cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death in both the Republic of Moldova and globally. The primary risk factors include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, being overweight, a sedentary lifestyle, and an unbalanced diet.

Experts highlight that many of these conditions can be prevented by adopting a healthy lifestyle, routinely monitoring blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol levels, and scheduling regular medical check-ups. These practices enable early detection and treatment of cardiovascular issues.
