Domestic energy output doubles in 2025

In 2025, coal consumption in the Republic of Moldova increased to 116 thousand tons, reflecting a 33% rise compared to the previous year. Additionally, statistical data indicate that petroleum product consumption grew, with diesel fuel remaining the dominant segment, accounting for 63% of total usage.
In 2025, the Republic of Moldova imported four times as much electricity as in 2024, totalling approximately 3.3 million MWh compared to 744 thousand MWh, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
At the same time, the country's primary energy production nearly doubled, increasing from 650 thousand MWh in 2024 to 1.1 million MWh in 2025.
Consequently, domestic electricity consumption rose slightly from 4 million MWh in 2024 to 4.1 million MWh in 2025. However, this consumption level remains more than 500,000 MWh lower than the figures recorded in 2022 and 2023.

In 2025, diesel accounted for the largest share of gross domestic consumption of petroleum products, holding 63 percent, which translates to over 750,000 tons—an increase of 60,000 tons compared to 2024.
Conversely, gasoline consumption has declined slightly, reaching 189,000 tons in 2025, down from 192,000 tons in 2024.
Additionally, the consumption of liquefied gases has steadily decreased over the past four years, falling from 57,000 tons in 2022 to 54,500 tons in 2025.

On June 26 of this year, the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova passed a law that mandates the establishment of emergency petroleum product reserves. By 2030, these reserves must be equivalent to at least 90 days' worth of net imports.
Additionally, the authorities aim to ensure that green energy generated within the Republic of Moldova accounts for at least 30% of domestic energy consumption by 2030.
