Eugeniu Osmochescu appointed acting Prime Minister by presidential decree

Moldova has a new acting prime minister. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economic Development and Digitalization Eugeniu Osmochescu was appointed to the role by President Maia Sandu in a decree signed on July 7.

"The head of state appoints another member of the government as acting prime minister until a new government is formed," the Presidential Office said in a statement.

Eugeniu Osmochescu's term as acting prime minister will begin on July 8, 2026.

His appointment comes shortly after Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu resigned.

On July 7, Munteanu wished Osmochescu success in a social media post and expressed confidence that he would "ensure the continuity of the government's work with responsibility."

"Starting tomorrow, in line with the decree signed by President Maia Sandu, Deputy Prime Minister Eugeniu Osmochescu will serve as acting prime minister. I thank him for accepting this responsibility and wish him every success. I am confident he will ensure the continuity of the government's work with responsibility," Munteanu wrote.

Eugeniu Osmochescu said he accepted the responsibility "with honor and a strong sense of duty."

"During this period, my priority will be to ensure the continuity of the government's work, maintain institutional stability, and advance decisions that serve the interests of the people of Moldova," he wrote in a Facebook post.

He also thanked those who placed their trust in him and said he looked forward to working with the government team.

"We will continue working for the good of the country and to deliver on our commitments," Osmochescu said.

Eugeniu Osmochescu became Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economic Development and Digitalization on November 1, 2025, when the Munteanu government took office.

Before joining the government, he spent more than 25 years developing, implementing, and evaluating strategies, public policies, and institutional reforms aimed at strengthening economic growth and competitiveness.

Throughout his career, he worked with international organizations, including the World Bank, European Union institutions, the Organisation for Economic Co operation and Development (OECD), and the Central European Free Trade Agreement (CEFTA). His work focused on sustainable development, investment promotion, digital transformation, governance, and innovation.

Osmochescu also served as a project manager at the International Finance Corporation (IFC), where he helped organize and moderate international events, including the International SME Conference.

In economic policy, he contributed to revisions of Moldova's Tax Code, including provisions on income tax, local taxes, indirect taxes, tax administration, free economic zones, and industrial parks.

He also advised Parliament's Committee on Economy, Budget and Finance, reviewing draft legislation on public administration, taxation, economic reform, anti dumping measures, competition, monopoly regulation, trade, and privatization. He also helped establish Moldova's first special economic zone.
