EU grants Moldova €120M for air defense amid Russian drone threats

The European Union has approved €120 million (approx. 2.35 billion MDL) in defense funding for Moldova for 2026, primarily aimed at boosting the nation's air defense capabilities.
President Maia Sandu announced the support while attending the Coalition of the Willing meeting in Paris. She highlighted the urgent need to strengthen national security as regional risks remain high.
Recent airspace breach underscores threat
The financial package comes after a Russian drone carrying 40 kilograms of explosives violated Moldovan airspace on the night of July 13. President Sandu noted that the incident serves as a stark reminder of why investments in air defense are vital for national safety.
Moldova's participation in the Paris summit marks its first time attending the Coalition of the Willing talks. The international group of mostly European nations collaborates to support Ukraine and work toward a lasting peace in the region.

Securing regional peace
President Sandu emphasized that Moldova's defense efforts are directly linked to broader European stability. She expressed gratitude to international partners for their continued backing.
Peace in Ukraine guarantees the safety of Moldova and its citizens, Sandu stated, reiterating that regional stability and national defense remain joint priorities.
