Starting this fall, Bălți residents will ride public transport free every Wednesday

Starting September 1, residents of Bălți will travel for free on public transport every Wednesday. The announcement was made by Bălți Mayor Alexandr Petkov.

Local authorities plan to make public transport completely free starting next year.

The objective of this initiative is to encourage the residents of Balti to give up their cars. Mayor Petkov mentioned that the city's trolleybuses are electric, which reduces environmental pollution.

“Since the foundation of our public transport system is the trolleybuses, we will name this initiative 'Green Wednesday.' However, 'Green Wednesday' is just the first step. Beginning January 1, 2027, we are preparing to implement completely free municipal public transport in Balti. Public transport must be comfortable, accessible, and serve the interests of every resident of the city,” the mayor stated.

Balti's public transport is financed through a mixed system that includes revenue from ticket and subscription sales, as well as subsidies from the local budget.

Currently, a trolleybus ride in Balti costs six lei.
