Indian President Droupadi Murmu will make an official visit to Chisinau on Monday, July 20, at the invitation of Moldovan President Maia Sandu.

The visit marks the first time an Indian head of state has visited the Republic of Moldova since diplomatic relations were established on March 20, 1992.

According to the Moldovan Presidency, the visit signals a strategic milestone for bilateral cooperation with India, one of the world's fastest-growing major economies.

Expanding economic and energy cooperation

Moldova seeks to deepen its partnership with New Delhi across key sectors, including trade, energy, information technology, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, agriculture, and education.

Bilateral relations gained renewed momentum in late 2024 following a 21-year hiatus. In December 2024, Moldova opened its embassy in New Delhi to expand political dialogue and promote economic interests on the Indian market.

Concrete commercial progress followed in February 2025, when Moldova exported its first shipment of apples to India.

In the energy sector, Indian infrastructure company KEC International completed the strategic 400 kV Vulcănești–Chișinău power transmission line, a crucial project for Moldova's energy security.

Moldova has also joined the International Solar Alliance (ISA), a global initiative launched by India and France, opening new avenues for renewable energy development.

Diplomatic agenda and business forum

Education remains another strong link between both nations. Moldovan universities currently host over 1,400 Indian students, primarily at the "Nicolae Testemițanu" State University of Medicine and Pharmacy.

President Murmu's schedule includes high-level talks with President Sandu to review bilateral relations and discuss expanding access for Moldovan goods in India.

Following joint press statements at 11:30 AM, both leaders will open the Moldova–India Business Forum, organized by the Moldovan Investment Agency. An Indian delegation of around 30 business executives will attend to explore investment opportunities.

President Murmu will also meet with Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu, members of the parliamentary friendship group, and representatives of the local Indian community.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, Moldova exported goods worth over $1.45 million to India in 2025, while imports from India totaled more than $73.9 million.
