MFA urges Moldovans should avoid non-essential travel to Russia
Moldovan citizens are advised to avoid non-essential travel to Russia due to significant security risks. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) warns that those who choose to travel to Russia may encounter extensive border checks, possible refusal of entry, detention, or even arbitrary detention.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), citizens of the Republic of Moldova are currently experiencing strict controls at border crossings into the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus. These controls may include extensive questioning, temporary retention of travel documents, checks of mobile phones and other electronic devices, collection of biometric data, and the possibility of being denied entry into the Russian Federation without adequate explanation.
The MFA also emphasizes the risk that Moldovan citizens could be detained, arrested, or placed in custody based on broad interpretations of charges by Russian authorities. In such situations, access to consular assistance may be delayed or restricted, limiting the ability of the Chisinau authorities to intervene on behalf of the individual.
Furthermore, the MFA warns that individuals in administrative detention or vulnerable situations might face pressure to sign enlistment contracts for the Russian armed forces. This risk is particularly significant for those who hold Russian citizenship or are considered Russian citizens under local laws.
Given these circumstances, the Ministry advises citizens to avoid non-essential travel to the Russian Federation and to carefully evaluate the necessity of transiting through the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus.
Additionally, authorities urge citizens to exercise caution when interacting with border officials and local authorities. They should refrain from signing any documents whose content or legal implications they do not fully understand.
Finally, the MFA recommends that Moldovan citizens immediately contact the Embassy of the Republic of Moldova in Moscow if they are detained or arrested, or encounter any situation that could affect their freedom or safety.
