Ex-Health Minister Emil Ceban resumes USMF rector post
Emil Ceban, the former Minister of Health, resumed his position as the rector of the "Nicolae Testemițanu" State University of Medicine and Pharmacy (USMF) on Friday, July 24. In his announcement, he outlined several key objectives: modernizing medical education, increasing the number of foreign students, and enhancing the university's international visibility. Additionally, the new management plan focuses on developing university infrastructure and attracting new investments.
Emil Ceban, university professor, PhD in medical sciences and academician, resumed his activity at the USMF after an eight-month period in which he held the position of Minister of Health.
Upon returning to office, Emil Ceban convened a working meeting with the university's administrative team, during which strategic directions for the coming period were discussed.
The First Vice-Rector for Didactic Activity and Academic Management, Olga Cernețchi, who exercised the rector's functional duties during his absence, welcomed Emil Ceban and noted that the experience he gained at the Ministry of Health will contribute to the university's further development.
We recall that Emil Ceban ended his mandate at the head of the ministry on July 21, after Prime Minister Vasile Tofan announced that the new Minister of Health would be Alexandru Gasnaș.
One of the memorable moments of his term as minister is that in Bălți, where Emil Ceban cried in front of the staff, saying that he was “ashamed” of the conditions he saw in the institution’s food block.
Emil Ceban also opposed the increase in VAT on medicines, as stipulated in the former Government's budget-fiscal policy.
Emil Ceban, aged 60, was first elected as rector of the "Nicolae Testemițanu" USMF in 2019 and was re-elected to this position in October 2024.
