Chisinau Airport sets up temporary pre-boarding area to reduce crowding
"Eugen Doga" International Airport in Chisinau began setting up a temporary pre-boarding area on Monday, July 27, to decongest passenger flows and streamline the boarding process during peak traffic times.
The new facility at "Eugen Doga" International Airport in Chisinau will remain operational until the terminal expansion project is completed. This initiative is part of the airport administration's efforts to adapt the infrastructure to the ongoing increase in passenger numbers.
The goal of the project is to install temporary structures that will provide passengers with a covered waiting area before they are transported by bus to the aircraft. The airport administration stated, "The structures that will be installed will provide a covered space for passengers waiting to be transported by buses to the aircraft and will be equipped with lighting and air conditioning systems to ensure better waiting conditions during the short period preceding boarding."
Airport representatives emphasize that the arrangement of such spaces is a widely used solution internationally, aimed at efficiently managing passenger flows during peak travel periods. The project was developed following consultations with handling operators and other operational units to identify the most effective ways to organize passenger circulation and coordinate airport activities.
According to the airport administration, the construction will proceed rapidly so that the new temporary area becomes operational as soon as possible. The press release further noted, "The development of this area is part of the measures implemented by the 'Eugen Doga' International Airport – Chisinau to adapt the infrastructure to the increase in passenger traffic while maintaining a high level of comfort and operational efficiency until the terminal expansion project is completed."
This decision comes in response to a record influx of passengers, which has placed significant pressure on the airport's infrastructure. Recently, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development, Vladimir Bolea, mentioned that while the construction of a temporary terminal is not feasible, he recommended that the airport administration install waiting tents and provide drinking water stations for passengers.
Additionally, the official announced that the airport has requested the Chisinau City Hall to temporarily transfer a plot of land near the terminal to create a temporary parking lot, aimed at alleviating congestion in the area. According to Bolea, approximately 35% of the airport's passengers are Ukrainian citizens, and the lack of high-capacity public transport is leading more travellers to rely on their personal vehicles.
Currently, passengers are advised to arrive at the airport three to four hours before their flight and to prepare their travel documents in advance. Those who have checked in online and are travelling with only hand luggage can utilise the PAX Track fast track service, while families with children under three years old receive priority at border control.
In the first six months of 2026, "Eugen Doga" International Airport - Chisinau served over 3.2 million passengers.
