Moldova expects an electricity shortage tonight and urges energy conservation from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM
On the evening of August 5, between 6:00 PM and 9:00 PM, the Moldovan power system is expected to experience a significant electricity deficit, according to Energocom. Authorities are urging the public to reduce their electricity consumption during these peak hours to prevent "costly consequences."
The recent energy deficit is attributed to an intense heat wave and a decrease in the Danube River's flow, which has negatively impacted energy production in the region. Low water levels limit some power plants' ability to operate at optimal capacity, which is essential for cooling their installations.
According to a press release from Energocom, “The Republic of Moldova is part of the regional energy market and relies on imports. Therefore, when there is a deficit in the region, it also affects the amount of energy that can be purchased.”
The forecasted energy deficit for this evening is as follows:
- 18:00 – 19:00: approximately 62 MWh
- 19:00 – 20:00: approximately 129 MWh (peak consumption)
- 20:00 – 21:00: approximately 112 MWh
Authorities implemented measures to conserve electricity and water due to the ongoing energy and water crisis.
In Chisinau, the municipality turned off decorative lighting and adjusted the centralized irrigation of green spaces to occur at night.
Similar conservation measures are being adopted at the levels of Parliament and the Government. These institutions have also ceased decorative lighting, some elevators in government buildings have been taken out of service, and employees of Parliament are encouraged to use the stairs instead.
Energy expert Sergiu Tofilat has estimated that the Republic of Moldova may experience power outages in August. He warns that these outages could happen during peak consumption times, specifically in the mornings and evenings when electricity usage is highest.
