Moldova President slams Taliban delegation visa misstep
Moldovan President Maia Sandu has described the issuance of entry visas to a Taliban-led Afghan Agriculture Ministry delegation as "disgraceful," calling for disciplinary sanctions against the responsible officials.
Addressing the incident, Sandu stated that the breach stemmed from public servants failing to inform themselves about the country's official foreign policy positions.
Institutional lapse
The request originated from a State Secretary at the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry, who failed to consult state policy regarding the Afghan regime before forwarding the file to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Foreign Ministry staff subsequently processed the visas under the assumption that the high-level administrative submission carried political clearance, allowing the delegation to secure entry authorization.
Government response
Prime Minister Vasile Tofan previously characterized the oversight as embarrassing and unacceptable, attributing the decision to a lapse in judgment and flawed inter-agency coordination.
The initial request was submitted on behalf of a local Moldovan company seeking to expand agricultural exports to Afghanistan, with State Secretary Vasile Șarban endorsing the paperwork.
Preventive measures
Although those traveling were not listed under European Union sanction regimes and standard administrative steps were followed, officials failed to assess the broader diplomatic implications.
Government leadership confirmed that inter-institutional consultation protocols are currently under review to prevent similar administrative breakdowns in the future.
