August has the most road accidents: Police explain why the risk increases
August is the month with the highest number of road accidents in the Republic of Moldova. This increase can be attributed to several factors, including a rise in the number of vehicles on the road, vacation travel, and a lack of adherence to traffic rules.
Pavel Apostol, Head of the Road Accident Analysis and Records Section at the National Inspectorate of Public Security, told Teleradio-Moldova that road traffic is significantly heavier during this period than the rest of the year, increasing the risk of accidents.
Speeding is the primary cause of road accidents. Other contributing factors include drunk driving, failure to yield to pedestrians, and the involvement of alternative modes of transport in traffic.
"The main cause of accidents during this period remains speed. We are referring to situations where the speed limit is exceeded, as well as instances when the speed is not adjusted for weather and road conditions," explained the specialist.
According to the INSP representative, between 40 and 44 percent of all road accidents in the country occur in Chisinau municipality. The most dangerous roads include Dacia Boulevard, Calea Ieșilor, and Alba Iulia streets. Outside urban areas, most accidents happen on heavily trafficked national roads such as R1, R6, and M1.
To reduce the number of accidents, the police are increasing the number of patrol teams, especially on routes leading to state border crossing points. They are also organizing controls and information campaigns aimed at traffic participants.
Pavel Apostol emphasizes the importance of drivers paying closer attention to preparing their vehicles before hitting the road. He advises against driving when fatigued and encourages taking breaks during long journeys.
"Drivers should be mindful of their health and mental state. They should avoid setting off when tired and plan rest stops based on the distance they intend to travel," recommended Pavel Apostol.
According to police data, there have been 375 road accidents with victims in the capital since the beginning of this year. These incidents resulted in 427 injuries and six fatalities.
In addition to serious accidents, there have been numerous minor accidents resulting only in property damage. These minor incidents can be resolved through amicable settlements without police intervention, provided that only two vehicles are involved, no one is injured, and the damage does not exceed 15,000 lei.
