Volodimir Zelensky calls for putting Russian nuclear industry under international sanctions: Russia uses energy as a weapon

Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski is calling for Russia's nuclear industry to be placed under international sanctions, saying Russia is using energy as a weapon to create dependencies and blackmail, a tactic that includes Ukraine's Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, which Moscow is using to threaten the world with nuclear disaster, Hotnews.ro reports.

"It is significant that global restrictive measures have been launched against the Russian nuclear industry. This industry not only generates funds for the aggressor's budget, but also helps to create a dependency of other states on whose territory allegedly 'energetic' nuclear projects are implemented. For the Kremlin, all energy is a weapon. For them, nuclear energy is also a weapon," Zelensky told his compatriots in a speech on Saturday evening.

"This is exactly what is happening at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, which Russia is using as a global blackmail weapon to blackmail the world with a disaster," Volodimir Zelenski explained.

In this context, he welcomed the fact that the UK, US, France, Japan and Canada have formed an alliance "to remove the nuclear industry of a terrorist state from the world market".

The tougher the sanctions regime against Russia, the more restrictions against the terrorist state and all those associated with it, against the entire Russian war economy, the sooner the end of aggression. And I thank all those in the world who understand this," Zelenski said.

Zelenski announced that three new decisions to sanction "those who invest in and support Russian aggression" had come into force in Ukraine on Saturday, and said that more than 320 companies and individuals were involved.

"First of all, this is another package of sanctions against the Russian military-industrial complex - companies supplying the terrorist army. This time, 322 companies have been added to the sanctions lists - manufacturers of weapons, components, etc. The other two sanctions lists include individuals and entities that help circumvent sanctions against Russia, own property of war criminals, and are involved in the destruction of freedom both in Russia and on our territory," Zelensky pointed out.

The Kiev leader mentioned new support packages from the US and Canada and welcomed help in strengthening air defences from the Netherlands, as well as a joint decision with Denmark to provide tanks.
