Josep Borrell calls on European Navy to patrol Taiwan Strait
European Union diplomacy chief Josep Borrell is urging EU countries' navies to patrol the Taiwan Strait, according to an opinion piece published Sunday by a French weekly, after he said Tuesday that Taiwan is "crucial" for Europe. China recently claimed "both shores" of the Taiwan Strait, shortly after a US destroyer crossed the corridor that is part of the inter-national waters.

Europe must be "very present in this dossier that concerns us economically, commercially and technologically", wrote Josep Borrell in an editorial for the Journal du Dimanche, according to AFP, as reported by Agerpres and Digi24.ro.
"I therefore call on the European navy to patrol the Taiwan Strait to underline Europe's commitment to freedom of navigation in this absolutely crucial area," insisted the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.
"Taiwan is crucial for Europe," Josep Borrell said on Tuesday at the opening of a debate in the European Parliament in Strasbourg on China.
"It is the most strategic strait in the world, especially in terms of trade: we must be present there by ensuring freedom of navigation," he pleaded.
"Taiwan is definitely part of our strategic perimeter to guarantee peace, to defend our interests", added the head of European diplomacy.
