A Russian drone, identified as a "more advanced" model, detonated at Crocmaz
On Sunday, August 9, a drone exploded in Crocmaz, located in the Stefan Voda district. The drone is powered by Russian-made propulsion systems. This information was shared by Defense Minister Anatolie Nosatîi, who referred to the preliminary analysis conducted by specialists examining the fragments of the crashed aircraft. According to the Minister, this model is more technologically advanced than the drones previously identified in the Republic of Moldova.
On August 12, Defense Minister Anatolie Nosatîi stated, "In recent days, we have experienced two incidents of national airspace violations, which pose a danger to our citizens."
He specifically referred to an incident that took place on Sunday, August 9, near the village of Crocmaz in the Ștefan Vodă district, where an aircraft crashed and exploded, damaging several homes.
"Specialists are currently analyzing the object that exploded. Preliminary analysis indicates that it is a Russian drone, specifically a model equipped with propulsion," the minister noted, adding that this model is reportedly more advanced than the drones previously identified within the Republic of Moldova's territory.
Anatolie Nosatîi also admitted that the National Army lacks sufficient radar systems for comprehensive airspace monitoring. "The number of radars in the army's inventory does not fully ensure surveillance of the national airspace," he stated.
He explained that certain drones can be harder to detect depending on their type, terrain, and altitude. According to the minister, these incidents are a direct consequence of the war in Ukraine, underscoring the need for the Republic of Moldova to enhance its defense capabilities. "We must continue to invest in our national army's capabilities to ensure we can identify and neutralize threats to protect our citizens," Nosatîi said.
When asked about the possibility of shooting down such drones, the minister mentioned that the Republic of Moldova is in the process of acquiring the necessary tools to neutralize objects that threaten national security. "Some models have already been procured and are in the national army's inventory, and we will continue this process," he explained.
Nosatîi also reassured that authorities are constantly monitoring developments on the Ukrainian front and adapting their defense capabilities to address new types of threats. He highlighted that the Republic of Moldova is learning from the experiences and practices used by Ukraine to protect its territory.
The Crocmaz incident led the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to temporarily recall the Ambassador of the Republic of Moldova to the Russian Federation, Lilian Darii, for consultations.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popșoi stated, “The downing of a drone with explosives that affects the interests and security of our citizens certainly impacts our relations with the Russian Federation,” following a Government meeting on August 12.
The Minister explained that recalling the ambassador for consultations is a standard diplomatic procedure employed when a state's national interests are jeopardized. He outlined various measures that can be taken in such situations, including communications, verbal notes, protest notes, and the recall of the ambassador.
Popșoi emphasized that this measure was deemed necessary due to the Russian Federation's ongoing attacks on Ukraine, which pose risks to the Republic of Moldova and endanger its citizens' security.
When asked about specific measures that could enhance the population's security, the Foreign Minister identified investment in defense as the primary solution. “The main and only measure that can ensure the security of our citizens is investment in defense,” declared Mihai Popșoi.
He highlighted the importance of developing air defense systems and capabilities to combat drones and cruise missiles. According to the Deputy Prime Minister, the Republic of Moldova is currently investing in its defense sector, utilizing both domestic resources and support from European and other external partners.
Popșoi emphasized, “The measures that can truly ensure the peace and safety of our citizens are investments in security and defense.”
Ambassador Lilian Darii will return to Moscow after consultations in Chișinău, as specified by the Foreign Minister.
The Crocmaz case is still under investigation by the authorities.
Law enforcement reported that the "rocket drone" struck a tree in a forested area, and the explosion occurred approximately 2.5 meters above the ground. The debris was scattered over a wide area and damaged several homes, although no one was injured.
Police indicated that this is the first instance of such an aircraft being identified on the territory of the Republic of Moldova.
