Ex-Polish Deputy Justice Minister, wanted for corruption, allegedly fled to Transnistrian region, IGP
Marcin Romanowski, the former Deputy Minister of Justice of Poland, is currently under criminal investigation for multiple cases, including corruption. He did not enter the Republic of Moldova through border crossing points controlled by the constitutional authorities. This information was clarified by the General Inspectorate of Police (IGP) after Polish authorities reported that Romanowski was in Tiraspol.
According to preliminary checks, the individual did not enter the Republic of Moldova through the state border crossing points controlled by the constitutional authorities, as reported by the IGP.
Furthermore, the authorities do not rule out the possibility that the man may have arrived in the Republic of Moldova by other means.
Currently, Moldovan authorities are taking further steps to verify whether the man is indeed on the territory of the country, including the region on the left bank of the Nistru, as stated by the police.
The IGP has also indicated that they are coordinating with the authorities in Poland to clarify the situation.
Polish authorities announced on Wednesday, August 12, that Marcin Romanowski, a former Deputy Minister of Justice wanted by Warsaw authorities for corruption-related crimes, is currently in the Transnistrian region.
A spokesman for the Warsaw Prosecutor's Office, as reported by the PAP agency, indicated that Romanowski informed the court in a letter stating that he resides in Tiraspol.
In this handwritten document, the former official expressed his willingness to appear before a Polish court or prosecutors, provided that he is not subjected to detention.
A European arrest warrant has been issued for Romanowski, who is facing multiple charges, including corruption.
Romanowski denies all charges against him.
