Ungheni hospital gets €60,000 Japanese grant for eye surgery
Ungheni Regional Hospital is set to modernize its ophthalmic services following the acquisition of a state-of-the-art surgical microscope for complex eye procedures.
The procurement is funded through €60,000 (approx. 1,170,000 MDL / $65,000) grant provided by the Government of Japan.
The grant agreement was signed by the Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Moldova, Yamada Yoichi, and the Director of Ungheni Regional Hospital, Elvira Stati.
Upgrading outdated medical infrastructure
Until now, surgical teams relied on equipment nearly 50 years old, performing approximately 100 operations monthly.
The new technology will increase surgical capacity by roughly 40% while significantly enhancing precision and patient safety.
"Our previous equipment no longer met medical standards or safety requirements," said Elvira Stati, Director of Ungheni Regional Hospital. "This upgrade allows us to perform more complex surgeries locally and preserve vision for thousands of patients."
Expanding regional healthcare access
Ungheni Regional Hospital serves as a key medical hub for western Moldova, treating over 13,000 patients annually across the Ungheni, Nisporeni, Călărași, and Fălești districts.
"This microscope is a primary tool for our daily surgical procedures," noted Vadim Popovici, an ophthalmic surgeon at the hospital. "It ensures broader access to essential sight-restoring treatments for patients across neighboring regions."
Ambassador Yamada Yoichi emphasized Japan's commitment to improving healthcare delivery, stating he hopes the project provides better working conditions for doctors and high-quality care for patients.
The aid was granted under Japan's "Kusanone" Human Security Grant Program, which has provided over €6.4 million in non-reimbursable funding to Moldova's health, education, and public sector projects since 2008.
