Moldova’s first highway takes shape: Feasibility study approved

The Republic of Moldova is one step closer to its first motorway. The National Road Administration (AND) has opened the tender for the feasibility study for the 125 kilometers of the Union Motorway (A8) on the territory of the Republic of Moldova, a road that will stretch from Ungheni to Budești, near Chișinău.
The study will analyze the technical and economic conditions for the construction of the Ungheni - Chisinau section, which is part of the A8 Ungheni - Chisinau -Odessa highway project.
"As part of the process of developing the technical and economic study, traffic studies, technical expertise, environmental impact assessment, identification of necessary land, solutions for network relocation, graphic documentation, technical and economic analyses, cost estimates, quotes and others will be carried out", specifies the National Road Administration.

The documentation prepared as part of the feasibility study will form the basis for the subsequent design and construction stages of the motorway.
According to the authorities, the works will have to comply with the legislation of the Republic of Moldova, national construction regulations, applicable European standards and international best practices in road infrastructure design.
The estimated value of the contract for preparing the study is 87.88 million lei, excluding VAT, with funds allocated from the Road Fund.
Interested companies may submit their bids by September 21, 2026, at 10:00.
Officially known as the A8 Motorway, Union Motorway is a major infrastructure project in Romania designed to connect Transylvania, starting from Târgu Mureș, with Moldova - Iași and Ungheni, up to the border with the Republic of Moldova, crossing the Eastern Carpathians.
Symbolically called "Union" because it reconnects the historic Romanian provinces, this high-speed road has an essential strategic role, as it is set to connect directly with the corresponding section on the territory of the Republic of Moldova and facilitate international trade flows.
