Rural Moldovan school secures €56,000 for indoor toilets
Răciula Gymnasium in Călărași District is set to overhaul its sanitary facilities through a €56,000 (approx. 1.1 million MDL) grant. The project eliminates the need for pupils and teachers to use outdoor pit latrines.
Although the school already has two indoor sanitary blocks, they remain insufficient for the student body. The upgrade will expand bathroom capacity and fully renovate locker rooms for physical education classes.
Upgrading infrastructure untouched since 1991
The school's existing sanitary blocks have not been renovated since 1991. Construction work began on July 11 and is scheduled for completion by late October, according to school director Ludmila Tcaci.
Over 200 children attend the gymnasium. Parents emphasized that modern indoor facilities are vital to protect students from severe weather and cold temperatures during winter months.
Eliminating groundwater contamination risks
Local authorities stressed that municipal budgets could not cover the high construction costs alone. The initiative received financial backing through Caritas, funded by the Czech Republic.
"The outdoor toilet stands dangerously close to the artesian well, posing a severe pollution hazard to local groundwater," stated Maria David, Mayor of Răciula. She noted that the new facilities ensure clean, safe, and dignified conditions for all pupils.
Răciula Gymnasium is one of four rural schools selected for this phase of the project aimed at improving water and sanitation across Moldova. Similar renovation projects are currently underway in Căinari, Cimișlia, and Taraclia.
