Romania and Ukraine leaders join Moldova for 35th independence day

Romanian President Nicușor Dan arrived in Moldova on Wednesday to mark the country's 35th independence anniversary and hold a trilateral summit with President Maia Sandu and Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Dan began his official trip in the southern municipality of Cahul, near the Romanian border, inspecting Romanian-funded reconstruction projects at the Bogdan Petriceicu Hașdeu Theater and a local university dormitory.

"Both projects are tangible examples of Romania's support, delivering direct benefits to Moldovan citizens," Moldovan Foreign Minister Mihai Popșoi said during the joint tour in Cahul, emphasizing that bilateral ties reflect shared aspirations for democracy and European Union integration.

Following local meetings with Cahul Mayor Nicolae Dandiș, Dan traveled to the capital, Chișinău, for bilateral talks with Sandu and to attend the national military parade.

The Moldovan president is scheduled to welcome Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy later in the day ahead of a trilateral meeting among the three delegations, followed by a joint press conference and a public address in Chișinău's central Great National Assembly Square.

The joint appearance marks a reinforced regional alignment on Moldova's Independence Day, following a 2025 celebration attended by French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
