Moldova backs Germany after Russian drone plot at Leipzig airport
Moldovan President Maia Sandu pledged full solidarity with Germany on Tuesday following a foiled Russian drone bombing at Leipzig Airport, warning that Moscow is testing European resilience.
“Full solidarity with Germany. Attacks such as the one in Leipzig aim to test Europe's limits and undermine support for Ukraine,” Sandu wrote on social media. “Russia is pursuing the same strategy across the continent. Europe must stay united against these actions and anticipate them.”
German investigation points to Moscow
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt announced at a Berlin press conference that investigators had concluded Russia orchestrated the Aug. 4 sabotage attempt at Leipzig/Halle Airport. A specialized robot defused the drone, which was packed with explosives and positioned near a Ukrainian cargo plane, while a second drone with explosive residue was discovered weeks later.
The airport serves as a vital logistics base for NATO and the Bundeswehr, as well as an operational hub for Ukraine's Antonov Airlines. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz warned that the country is increasingly exposed to hybrid warfare, as Berlin prepares retaliatory measures including closing Russia's consulate general in Bonn.
European Union warns against intimidation
EU High Representative Kaja Kallas accused Moscow of stepping up hybrid operations across the continent to intimidate European governments and weaken backing for Kyiv. Kallas emphasized that European allies remain resolute and that Russian disruption efforts will fail.
