Moldova approves €4.3M UN grant to upgrade military capabilities
On 2 September, the Foreign Policy Committee of Moldova’s Parliament endorsed an agreement with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) to implement a €4.32 million (approx. 84.7 million MDL) grant project.
The initiative, titled "Strengthening the Operational Capability of the National Army of the Republic of Moldova," directly targets modernization and institutional resilience.
Upgraded logistics and standardized troop certification
Under the agreement, the National Army will receive new tactical transport vehicles, modular housing units, and specialized field facilities. The project also funds formal instruction, certification, and assessment programs for Moldovan service members.
The accord now heads to the parliamentary plenary for final ratification, with project completion scheduled for 30 December 2026.
Broader modernization backed by Western partners
This funding builds upon a major defense procurement formalized on 30 June, when Moldova’s Ministry of Defense and the Estonian Centre for Defence Investments agreed to acquire over 100 modern military vehicles. Canadian manufacturer Roshel will supply the armored vehicles under a project valued at over €50 million, fully funded by an EU non-reimbursable grant.
Deliveries under the Roshel procurement framework are scheduled for completion by May 2027.
The transaction forms part of an assistance package running from 2022 to 2025 designed to reinforce the National Army's mobility, supported through the European Peace Facility (EPF).
Total European Union assistance for Moldova’s armed forces modernization has reached €197 million in recent years. All equipment delivered under the EPF remains strictly non-lethal, focusing on airspace surveillance, logistics, and civil resilience, while fully preserving the nation’s constitutionally mandated neutrality.
