Hungary expels 10 Russian diplomats over Vienna Convention breach

Hungary expelled ten Russian diplomats on Tuesday over activities incompatible with their diplomatic status under the Vienna Convention, marking a significant foreign policy shift under Prime Minister Peter Magyar’s government.

Sovereignty and diplomatic dialogue

“The decision protects Hungary's security and sovereignty,” Foreign Minister Anita Orban said. “We will not allow anyone to endanger Hungary's sovereignty, freedom, or independence, and if necessary, we will defend Hungary's independence and sovereignty through diplomatic means.”

The minister stressed that the measure does not amount to severing diplomatic relations with Moscow, affirming that Budapest will maintain necessary dialogue based on mutual respect and diplomatic standards. She did not disclose the identities or ranks of the expelled officials, nor did she elaborate on the specific activities that prompted the move.

Geopolitical pivot under Magyar

The decision underscores a stark turn in relations between Budapest and Moscow under the administration of Prime Minister Peter Magyar, whose government took office in May following parliamentary elections.

In May, Budapest expelled a Russian diplomat accused of conducting intelligence operations under diplomatic cover. Hungarian authorities also summoned Russian Ambassador Yevgeny Stanislavov that month following Russian drone strikes targeting western Ukraine's Zakarpattia region, which is home to a sizable ethnic Hungarian minority.

Orban renewed calls for Moscow to pursue “an immediate ceasefire and a peaceful, lasting settlement to the war as soon as possible.”

Moscow condemned the expulsions, with Russian state news agency TASS reporting that Russia will retaliate.
