Air alert in Romania after Russian attack on Ukraine
On the morning of Friday, September 11, authorities issued a new RO-Alert message for residents of northern Tulcea county, Romania. This alert came after the Ministry of Defense's radars in Bucharest detected air targets near the border with Ukraine. In response, the Ministry of Defence dispatched two F-16 aircraft from the 86th Air Base in Borcea to monitor the situation.
According to Romanian media, a warning message was sent at 4:36 a.m. after the National Military Command Center notified the General Inspectorate for Emergencies about the activation of procedures to protect the population. People were warned that objects could fall from the airspace.
“Two F-16 aircraft from the Romanian Air Force, part of the Air Police combat service at the 86th Air Base in Borcea, took off to monitor the situation. The air alert in northern Tulcea County was lifted at 6:30 a.m.,” reported the Ministry of National Defense.
Romanian authorities stated that the aerial targets did not enter Romania's national airspace, and MApN forces continue to monitor the situation in the border area.
Friday's alert marks the second issued in Tulcea County within two days. On Thursday, authorities also warned the public about the possibility of falling objects from the airspace. To monitor the situation, Romanian authorities then deployed two F-18 aircraft and a helicopter.
These alerts near the Romanian border come amid intensified Russian airstrikes on Ukraine. Over the past 24 hours, several Ukrainian towns have been targeted, resulting in at least seven fatalities and around 120 injuries, including children. Affected towns include Pavlograd, Dnipro, Kramatorsk, Sumy, Zaporozhye, Odessa, and Kiev.
In the Ukrainian capital, nighttime attacks caused destruction in a residential area. According to local authorities, one strike impacted a nine-story apartment building in the Dniprovskyi district, igniting a large fire.
Prior to the attack, the Ukrainian Air Force had warned the population that Russian drones, including those equipped with jet propulsion systems, were heading toward Kiev.
