German broadcaster RTL uncovers Russian disposable agent network

German broadcaster RTL exposed a suspected Russian intelligence network employing recruited “disposable agents” for surveillance and espionage across Germany following a year-long undercover journalistic sting, independent network TV Rain reported.

Undercover operation unmasks Telegram recruitment ring

RTL investigative journalist Angelika Geray spent months cultivating a fictitious pro-Russian social media persona dubbed “Katya” to infiltrate local proxy networks. Working alongside colleagues, the undercover team received operational assignments via Telegram from handlers linked to Russian intelligence.

Initial requests demanded low-level tasks, including taking photographs, retrieving parcels, and purchasing anonymous SIM cards. The operational scope quickly escalated to sensitive reconnaissance, requiring reporters to surveil a human rights organization, tail an employee of Germany's Christian Democratic Union (CDU), infiltrate a political party, and gather intelligence on German defense contractors.

Political connections and violent threats

The “Katya” profile drew the attention of Jovica Jović, an affiliate of the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) whom RTL identified as a prominent figure in Germany's pro-Russian milieu. During private exchanges, Jović acknowledged that Russian security services were likely coordinating pro-Kremlin propaganda efforts inside Germany.

In a subsequent on-record interview with RTL, Jović denied having ties to intelligence agencies or taking part in state-sponsored disinformation campaigns. BSW party leadership stated that Jović is an ordinary member without executive functions, pledging to review the allegations.

Following the public broadcast of the investigation, Geray received a death threat on her voicemail warning: “If you try to run, you will catch a bullet!” German authorities have been notified of the intimidation attempt.
