Ilan Șor is no longer a member of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova. Reaction of the "Șor" Party
The draft resolution establishing that Ilan Șor has ceased to be a member of Parliament was voted by 56 MPs. Ilan Șor is thus no longer a member of the Moldovan Parliament.
The decision follows his 15-year prison sentence. At the same time, the document states that one seat in Parliament belonging to the "ȘOR" political party has been declared vacant.
Socialist and Communist MPs did not vote for the decision.
In a reaction, the "ȘOR" party said it would challenge Parliament's decision at the Constitutional Court.
"The "ȘOR" Party has taken note of the unprecedented abuse, finalized today with the vote by the parliamentary majority of the illegal decision to terminate the mandate of Ilan Șor. Without waiting for an irrevocable decision from all courts, without respecting the jurisprudence of the ECHR and the Constitutional Court, the government has gone down the path of abuse and defiance of the Fundamental Law".
Ilan Șor's place would be taken by Vladimir Vitiuc, a former deputy speaker of the Parliament, who in 2015 left the Party of Communists, then the Democratic Party and ran in the last elections on the lists of the Șor Party. He is one of the defectors under investigation for illicit enrichment.
Ilan Șor was sentenced in 2017 in the "billion theft" case to 7 and a half years in prison for fraud and money laundering worth more than 5.4 billion lei. On 14 April, he was finally sentenced to 15 years in prison by the Chisinau Court of Appeal, but his lawyers call the decision illegal and have announced that they will challenge it at the Supreme Court of Justice.
