At the same time, the liberalised visa regime has provided new opportunities for the exchange of experience, knowledge and personal development and has strengthened the inter-human, cultural and social ties between the Republic of Moldova and the European Union, says a message from the Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, Nicu Popescu. According to the official, visa liberalisation was one of the important steps towards EU accession.

The Republic of Moldova-EU dialogue on visa liberalisation was launched on 15 June 2010 and the Action Plan was offered to our country on 24 January 2011.

On 27 November 2013, the European Commission proposed visa liberalization for Moldovan citizens. It confirmed that the Republic of Moldova had met all the conditions of the Action Plan and was endorsed by the EU Council on 20 December and the European Parliament on 27 February 2014. Since 28 April 2014, citizens of the Republic of Moldova can travel visa-free to the EU.
