Russian drone incursions in Moldova surge tenfold, STRATCOM warns
Russian drone incursions into Moldovan airspace have surged nearly tenfold since 2022, accompanied by intensifying hostile propaganda campaigns designed to intimidate civilians and undermine national defense, state monitoring authorities warned on Monday.
Data published by the Center for Strategic Communication and Countering Disinformation (STRATCOM) revealed that unauthorized overflights escalated from just four documented breaches in 2022 to 39 in 2026.
Strategic communication analysts noted that every kinetic airspace violation is systematically shadowed by coordinated hybrid operations aimed at deflecting culpability away from Moscow.
Coordinated disinformation tactics
According to STRATCOM, hostile networks employ aggressive “blame-reversal” techniques to accuse victims of triggering the incursions. Simultaneously, coordinated botnets deploy copy-paste messaging across social platforms to simulate genuine public backlash.
These disinformation narratives also deliberately link airspace violations to local socio-economic grievances. The strategy seeks to stoke public anxiety, paralyze critical thinking, erode trust in state institutions, and weaken public backing for Moldova's European integration trajectory.
“History demonstrates that if you surrender to fear, Russia does not stop; it intensifies its pressure and intimidation,” the STRATCOM analysis stated. “A lack of national defense capability is far costlier for the state, society, and individual citizens when aggression begins than continuous investment in security. Furthermore, recent history provides multiple examples where Russia violated the internationally recognized and statutory neutrality of sovereign states.”
Incursions threaten sovereign skies
The warning followed another aerial violation early Monday, September 21, when defense surveillance radar detected an unauthorized drone at 00:17 AM. The aircraft flew from Tribusivca in Ukraine’s Vinnytsia region toward Hristovaia, located in Moldova's eastern districts on the left bank of the Dniester.
On September 16, Chișinău officially condemned repeated aerial violations before the OSCE, demanding Moscow halt regional destabilization efforts.
Since Russia initiated its full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, nearly 80 Russian missiles, attack drones, and decoy aircraft have traversed Moldovan airspace. Several devices have crashed and detonated on sovereign soil, inflicting material destruction.
The latest wave caused widespread alarm on Friday, September 18, when an explosion at 04:20 AM woke residents near Colonița outside Chișinău. Investigators subsequently recovered drone wreckage across a 100-meter radius, including the propulsion engine. Multiple unauthorized flights were likewise tracked on Saturday, while police investigated unconfirmed blast reports across Orhei and Călărași on September 20.
