Nicușor Dan at the UN: "Romania will support Moldova's resilience"
Romania will continue to support the resilience of the Republic of Moldova, the second country affected by Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine. Romania's President, Nicușor Dan, made this statement in his address to the 81st session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly.
Nicușor Dan devoted a significant part of his speech to the Republic of Moldova, describing it as the second-most affected country by the war in Ukraine.
According to Nicușor Dan, the Republic of Moldova is grappling with the economic shock caused by Russian aggression and a sustained hybrid campaign involving the spread of disinformation, energy-related pressure, and attempts to destabilize democratic institutions.
"Romania is a staunch supporter of the Republic of Moldova in the face of these challenges. Romania also remains the Republic of Moldova's strongest advocate within the European Union, sharing its own accession experience and providing political, technical, and diplomatic support for the country's continued European path," the Romanian leader stated.
At the same time, the leader from Cotroceni directly criticized Russia from the UN podium, accusing it of violating its peacekeeping mandate as a permanent member of the UN Security Council and of launching an "illegal, unprovoked, and unjustified war of aggression waged on a large scale against Ukraine." The President of Romania warned that Russia's actions should not be analyzed solely through the lens of the war in Ukraine: "The threat posed by the Russian Federation is not limited to Ukraine. Europe is the target of a hybrid war involving cyberattacks, disinformation campaigns, sabotage, and disruptions to critical infrastructure, with the aim of undermining citizens' trust in democratic institutions and discouraging support for Ukraine."
The Romanian head of state is in New York to attend the high-level segment of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly—the first such session Nicușor Dan has attended in his capacity as President of Romania.
