Russia sentenced at the ECtHR for crimes committed during the 2008 conflict in South Ossetia
The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has condemned Russia and ordered it to pay Georgia compensation of around €130 million for crimes committed during the conflict in South Ossetia in 2008.

The Strasbourg court declared itself competent in the case, despite the fact that Russia was suspended from the Council of Europe in March 2022 after the invasion of Ukraine, and asked the organisation's Committee of Ministers to continue to ensure compliance with the judgments against Moscow.
The bulk of the compensation, €115 million, is to go to the 23,000 Georgians who were prevented from returning to their homes in the breakaway provinces of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
In addition, Moscow must pay €8.2 million for the obstacles it put in place to prevent relatives of 412 victims from properly investigating the deaths of their loved ones during the conflict.
