Russian Mi-8 helicopter breaches Polish airspace near Kaliningrad
Polish fighter jets scrambled on Wednesday morning after a Russian Mi-8 helicopter crossed into Polish airspace from the Kaliningrad exclave, penetrating 300 metres near Braniewo for 42 seconds, military officials said.
According to the Polish Armed Forces Operational Command, the Russian aircraft approached the frontier from the Kaliningrad region at 11:08 a.m. local time. Ground-based radar systems tracked the flight continuously throughout the brief intrusion, Euronews reported.
Air defense readiness under test
Military leadership assessed that the unauthorized flight represented an intentional probing maneuver against allied tracking infrastructure. “The nature of the incident indicates that Russia is once again testing the readiness of our air defence,” the Operational Command said in an official statement.
Officials emphasized that border surveillance and early-warning networks operate continuously to counter potential airspace violations. “Poland's air defence system crews provide 24/7 surveillance and maintain constant readiness to guarantee the security of Polish airspace,” the command added.
Surge in Baltic reconnaissance flights
Wednesday's border incursion marks the latest in a string of recent Russian military aviation encounters near Poland's borders. Just one day earlier, Polish fighter jets intercepted a Russian Ilyushin Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft operating roughly 40 kilometers off the Baltic shoreline.
“Russia regularly tests NATO's eastern flank,” Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz said regarding the previous intercept. Similar encounters have occurred off the coast near Łeba and Koszalin amid heightened aerial patrols across the Baltic Sea corridor.
