Cristina Gherasimov: Ireland's support is crucial for Moldova's EU accession

The support of Ireland—which currently holds the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union—is essential for the Republic of Moldova in its EU accession process, stated Cristina Gherasimov, Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration, during meetings with Irish officials in Dublin.

Discussions with Thomas Byrne, Ireland’s Minister of State for European Affairs, focused on developments regarding the Republic of Moldova’s European agenda, the security challenges facing the country and the region, and opportunities to advance accession negotiations during Ireland’s presidency of the Council of the European Union.

"We continue to work hard across every institution to do our homework and deliver results in all areas. Moldova has demonstrated its commitment through its efforts to date and is moving with determination along the path to the EU," said Deputy Prime Minister Gherasimov.

During her visit to Ireland, the Deputy Prime Minister met with Mark Daly, Cathaoirleach (Chair) of the Irish Senate, and representatives of the parliamentary committees on European Affairs and Foreign Affairs and Trade.

"We discussed the concrete steps we are taking to prepare our country for accession—aligning legislation, implementing reforms, and strengthening institutions. We also spoke about our country's future—which we envision within the EU—where citizens can enjoy the same benefits as those in Ireland: freedom, peace, development opportunities, community investment, and a better standard of living," Cristina Gherasimov explained.

The Deputy Prime Minister thanked the Irish authorities for their support of the Republic of Moldova and for championing the country's European integration path. In this context, Gherasimov highlighted the importance of this cooperation at the current stage of accession negotiations.

"At this crucial stage of the EU accession negotiation process, Ireland's political and parliamentary support is of great importance to the Republic of Moldova," Cristina Gherasimov said.

During a recent official visit to New York, Prime Minister Vasile Tofan met with his Irish counterpart, Micheál Martin; the head of the Chisinau government emphasised that the Republic of Moldova is ready to open all remaining negotiation clusters.

According to Vasile Tofan, the period during which Ireland holds the presidency of the Council of the European Union can be leveraged to accelerate the Republic of Moldova's European integration process.
