Employees of MAI may get up to 30% raise

Salaries for police officers and other employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MAI) could increase by 10% to 30%, depending on their position and responsibilities, once the new salary law—scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2027—comes into force. The law envisions even larger increases for IT specialists and forensic experts. However, these figures are indicative only, as the Minister of Internal Affairs, Daniella Misail-Nichitin, said the draft law has not yet been approved.
According to the Minister, the current draft provides 10–15% salary increases for non-commissioned officers and employees at the start of their careers. For personnel with greater duties and responsibilities, the increases could reach 20–30%.
"For certain categories of employees whose duties and responsibilities are significantly greater, we are talking about increases of 20–30%. Furthermore, for specific categories—such as those in rare professional roles, for instance in the IT sector—salaries will see even larger increases," explained Daniella Misail-Nichitin on the program "Pe Față" on Moldova 1.
The Minister noted that IT specialists and forensic experts need larger raises to attract and retain professionals in the system. In information technology, the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MAI) faces challenges competing with salaries offered by private-sector companies.
Another proposed change involves differentiated pay for employees who perform the same duties but carry different workloads. For example, border police officers stationed at busy crossing points could be compensated differently than those working at locations with a lower volume of travelers.
We remind you that the reform of the public-sector pay system—which entails amending Law No. 270/2018—was originally scheduled to take effect on September 1, 2026, but has been postponed due to budgetary constraints. The new salary scale is scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2027, after the Government and Parliament approve the amendments. According to estimates previously presented by the authorities, salaries in the public order sector are expected to increase by an average of 15%.
To compensate for the delay, the authorities have provided one-off payments in October 2026 for public sector employees whose average monthly gross salary is below 20,000 lei. Personnel in the public order sector are among those eligible for an allowance of 3,000 lei. The reform also stipulates that the base salary should account for at least 70% of total remuneration, and aims to reduce the gap between the lowest and highest salaries in the public sector.
