"Europe is Close" Program: 200 road projects completed in Moldova

The 200th project to modernize local road infrastructure, funded through the Government’s "Europe is Close" program, has been completed in the village of Borceag, Cahul district. A road in the center of the locality—which had not undergone major repairs for nearly five decades—has been paved, providing safer access to nine public and social institutions. The Government allocated over 1.84 million lei from the state budget for these works.
The project, titled “Asphalting works on road sections in the village of Borceag, Cahul district,” was implemented between April and October 2026.
The works involved the major rehabilitation—through asphalting—of three road segments on “31 August 1989” str., located in the center of the village.

In addition to paving the road, workers installed curbs and traffic signs, applied road markings, and set up pedestrian crossings. In total, 1,800 square meters were paved.
According to the National Office for Regional and Local Development (ONDRL), the road infrastructure had deteriorated significantly over the years, hindering the movement of both pedestrians and vehicles. The road had not undergone a major rehabilitation since its construction nearly 50 years ago.

Safer access to nine local institutions
Approximately 1,500 residents of Borceag village, as well as those passing through the locality, benefit from the upgraded road. The works improve access to the kindergarten, the middle school, the family medical practice, the nursing home, the cultural center, the town hall, the post office, the local police station (under the Cahul Police Inspectorate), and the Cahul-Gaz branch office.
Tatiana Rusu, the mayor of Borceag village, stated that the road rehabilitation contributes both to increased traffic safety and to better access to public and social services.
"The rehabilitation of this road has significantly improved travel conditions for the residents of Borceag. People can now move around safely—whether on foot or by vehicle—thanks to the paved road and the pedestrian crossings," noted Tatiana Rusu.
According to the mayor, this infrastructure upgrade is especially important for children, the elderly, and people with special needs as they travel to schools, the family medical practice, or other local services.
The mayor said that the project has also enhanced the village center, providing the community with suitable infrastructure that had been needed for many years.

Over 1.84 million lei allocated by the Government
The Government’s contribution, provided through the National Fund for Regional and Local Development (FNDRL), amounted to 1,849,793.64 lei. The local public administration of Borceag contributed 20,546.68 lei.
The local mayor stated that central-level financial support was essential to carry out the investment, given the local budget's limited resources.
The local administration intends to continue leveraging available funding opportunities to implement new infrastructure projects and contribute to the village's development.

200 projects completed nationwide
According to data presented by the ONDRL, 200 of the 353 projects approved for funding under the Government’s "Europe is Close" program have been completed to date. More than 400,000 people across 335 localities in the Republic of Moldova are benefiting from repaired road infrastructure.

Through these investments, the authorities aim to modernize local road infrastructure, improve citizens' access to public institutions and community services, and enhance the safety of travel within the country's localities.
