Electronic devices on aircraft: Safety rules

An increasing number of passengers travel with electronic devices, ranging from mobile phones and tablets to external batteries, cameras, and electronic cigarettes. To ensure a safe, incident-free journey, it is important to be aware of the rules for transporting them.

The good news is that most everyday electronic devices can be carried on board an aircraft, as long as you follow the applicable rules. However, some categories require extra attention.

The most important safety rule is that you must carry external batteries (power banks), spare lithium batteries, and electronic cigarettes only in your carry-on (hand) luggage; they are strictly prohibited in checked baggage. These devices may overheat or activate accidentally, so they must be kept secure and, whenever possible, within easy reach of the passenger.

For a more comfortable journey, fully charge your electronic devices before departure to reduce the need to charge them during the flight.

Furthermore, passengers must follow the airline's specific policies on using external batteries on board. To prevent short circuits or accidental activation during the trip, keep spare batteries and power banks in their original packaging, in a protective case, or in separate bags.

Also ensure battery terminals are protected and kept away from metal objects, such as keys or coins. Electronic cigarettes must likewise be protected against accidental activation. In general, items such as mobile phones, tablets, laptops, cameras, power banks, spare lithium batteries, and electronic cigarettes may be carried in your hand luggage, subject to any applicable restrictions. You can generally also carry mobile phones, tablets, laptops, and cameras in checked baggage, provided they are completely switched off and protected against damage and accidental activation.

Before traveling, passengers are encouraged to check the airline's policies regarding the transport of batteries and electronic devices—especially concerning large equipment or specialized devices.

Following these recommendations helps prevent incidents and ensures a safe, comfortable journey for passengers and crew.
