Maia Sandu, for CNN: "We remain committed to our major objective - to keep Moldova part of the free world"

The authorities in Chisinau are doing everything possible to keep the Republic of Moldova part of the free world, but also to build a real democratic country. Statements in this sense were made by the president of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, in an interview for CNN. Although she admitted that our country continues to be a "fragile democracy", the head of state assured that the authorities in Chisinau have only one goal - to strengthen democratic institutions and processes.

"We believe in democracy, we fought for democracy for many years, together with the people of Moldova. Of course, Moldova continues to be a fragile democracy, but our objective was to strengthen democratic institutions, democratic processes, and we are trying to do that, as we promised the people", said President Maia Sandu, in an interview for CNN, conducted by the well-known journalist Christiane Amanpour.

The head of state assured that, although the war caused by the Russian Federation in Ukraine "makes our life and everyone's life more difficult", a situation in which the government in Chisinau must devote "a lot of time" to crisis management, the authorities remain committed to the objective to keep the Republic of Moldova part of the free world and to make our country a truly democratic one.

Asked if the Republic of Moldova can end up in the situation of Ukraine and Georgia, due to the pro-European commitment it has assumed, Maia Sandu stated that only the citizens of the Republic of Moldova can choose the course and development model of the country.

"We are a free country and it is our decision to decide how we want to develop our country and what development model we want to implement. It is our decision and, of course, the decision of the member states, and it is not Russia's business. We believe in the free world and we believe in the fact that every nation has the right to decide its own destiny", concluded the head of state.

Moldova 1 recalls that the Republic of Moldova obtained the status of a candidate country for accession to the European Union on June 23.
