The armed attack took place on Thursday evening near Mladenovac after the attacker fired an automatic weapon from a moving vehicle and then fled, state television RTS reported.

Seven of the wounded are in critical condition. Police are searching for the suspect, believed to be a 21-year-old man, and have surrounded an area where he is believed to be hiding, RTS reported.

A large number of police officers are in the area, and the attacker is also being sought with helicopters and drones in the air as officers search over difficult terrain.

Interior Minister Bratislav Gašić called the attack "an act of terrorism".

Local reports suggest the dead include a police officer and his sister, who were shot after a clash broke out in the village of Malo Orasje, near Mladenovac. The shooting is believed to have taken place at several addresses.

On Wednesday, a 13-year-old student shot dead eight classmates and a guard at a school in Belgrade, an attack that shocked the Balkan country.

Police identified Wednesday's attacker Kosta Kecmanović and said he had been a student at the school since 2019. Police said he used two of his father's guns for the attack, which he had allegedly been planning for a month.
