SIS: More than 2,000 files on political repression and crimes during the Soviet period to be made public
Information on gross violations of human rights admitted during the Soviet period on the current territory of the Republic of Moldova will be made available to the public, the Information and Security Service (SIS) says. More than 2,000 files stored in the SIS special state repository will be handed over to the National Archives Agency. An agreement to this effect has been signed by the directors of the two institutions.
"The agreement provides for the phased transmission of archival documents that are part of the Service's fonds, in particular those relating to political repression during the Soviet period, as well as, for the first time, files on the administrative activity of the Soviet coercive institution within the Moldovan SSR," the SIS press release said.
The head of the SIS, Alexandru Musteața, said that the institution will continue its efforts to complete the process of selecting and processing the materials in its archives in order to facilitate their transmission to the National Archives Agency, so that people interested in learning about the country's historical past can have access to these files.
In his turn, the Director of the National Archives Agency, Igor Cashu, thanked the Service for its openness and consistent contribution to the valorisation of the national documentary heritage, mentioning that he will continue to opt for the strengthening of mutual cooperation relations in the given sector of activity.
