Message of President Maia Sandu on the occasion of Europe Day: the Republic of Moldova will strengthen and enrich the European Union
The Republic of Moldova will enrich and strengthen the European Union, says President Maia Sandu in her Europe Day message. The head of state expresses hope that the time will come when the Republic of Moldova will celebrate this day as a member of the European Union.
"Today we celebrate the peace and unity of the European family. This is the first year we are celebrating Europe Day as a candidate country for accession to the European Union and I am convinced that one day we will celebrate Europe Day as a full member of this great family."
"Europe has united to prevent wars and to ensure the right to life and happiness for all European citizens. Now Europe unites us - all the people of Moldova - to earn our rightful place among European countries."
"Moldova will strengthen and enrich the European Union. Happy birthday, Europe! Happy birthday, European Moldova!" wrote Maia Sandu on her Facebook account.
Every year on 9 May, peace and unity in Europe is celebrated. Europe Day marks the anniversary of the historic moment represented by the "Schuman Declaration" which proposed the idea of a new form of political cooperation in Europe, as war between the nations of Europe was unthinkable. French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman's proposal is considered the cornerstone of the European Union.
EU Ambassador to Moldova Jānis Mažeiks sent a message to mark Europe Day, reaffirming the EU's solidarity with Ukraine and Moldova.
"Russia's brutal war of aggression against Ukraine has shown how important solidarity is to protect people's lives and maintain prosperity," said the EU ambassador.
The Republic of Moldova celebrates Victory and Heroes' Memorial Day and Europe Day on 9 May.
Europe Day events will take place on Saturday 13 May in the Square of the Grand National Assembly, where the "European Village" will be set up.
